The land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park has been saved from mining, for now. The Obama administration lengthened the two-year ban set in 2009 ban on mining in the 1 million acres surrounding the park.
The extension is supposed to be so an investigation on the water quality could be finished. Hopefully they'll realize that, no matter the current water quality situation, uranium mining surely won't improve it.
A public comment time was given for input on the issue and the new backcountry management plan in the park.
My fear is that The Goat is right, that this is just so everyone forgets about it between now and then so they go ahead and start blasting for uranium.
