OhRanger.com reports that Grand Canyon National Park will be installing 9 water bottle filling stations. Three of which will be on the North Rim, and six on the South Rim.
Park officials estimate water bottles to be responsible for 30 percent of the park's solid waste.
I hope people use them but, unfortunately, this reminds me of the signs about not feeding the animals that people use to lean on while they feed those little squirrels that're everywhere in Grand Canyon. I doubt I'll ever understand why people take time to visit a place of beauty and ruin it a little.
I'm sure it's quite a revenue booster for the grocery store, but why not remove plastic water bottles from the shelves. Just sell canteens. There's not another store within an hours drive. Otherwise people are just going to be using the filling stations to put out their cigarette so they can throw it on the ground. Earth is not your ashtray!

It was certainly great news for people of Grand Canyon and its tourists. I think it was a great idea to install refilling station at places that are visited more often, like tourist spots or public places. It is true that discarded water bottle is a huge part of solid waste. But, water refilling station can surely help decrease it, as people will no longer have to throw away bottles because they can reuse it by refilling it with water.
