Tragedy and Lightning Strike in Grand Canyon

South Kaibab Trail
Friday, October 1, 2010, was a tragic day in Grand Canyon National Park. Two Korean women were injured by lightning and a California man fell to his death.

Attempting to jump between rock outcrops, 42-year-old Andrew N. Stires fell to his death, report eyewitnesses.

Due to high winds and lightning, his body was not recovered until Saturday. It was 500 feet below the rim.

The women were standing on the rim east of the visitor center when they were struck by secondary lightning.

Because thunderstorms are forecasted through tomorrow, rangers are advising everyone to stay away from exposed points during storms. Who goes to the Grand Canyon to avoid exposure? Sounds like “stay home” to me.

Please read the NOLS Lightning Safety Guidelines and Backpacker's story about Friday.

The best time to visit Grand Canyon is during early spring or late fall. There are fewer visitors during these seasons.
