The Next Great American Adventure

The next great American adventure may have been born on November 4, 2009, when the U.S. Forest Service changed rules, allowing mountain bikes on the Continental Divide Trail.

In areas where mountain biking is not allowed, as in some National Parks, the Forest Service’s ruling does not make mountain biking on the CDT permissible.

Those opposed to the changes are concerned that mountain biking on a trail build for hiking and horseback riding will lead to the trail’s degradation.

There is an alternative to the CDT specifically for mountain bikes, the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.
